Welcome to My New Studio!
How did we get here? Well, I started Ashley Oberholtzer Photography in 2010 after my son was born—finally finding something I loved to photograph (and to this day, he still hates having his picture taken, haha). When my daughter arrived in 2012, I took the leap and went full-time with my business (goodbye, corporate world!). We converted our living room into a home studio, but pretty soon, that space became a sea of props and baby blankets, with even the guest room overtaken for storage. By the time my third baby came along, I knew I needed more room (and I was so over the mad dash to clean up before every session). So, I moved into a downtown studio with a few other photographers.
The space was huge! It was glorious. It was cool, and it was downtown. But, as charming as downtown can be, it also comes with its...adventures. One night, a drunk driver actually crashed through our studio’s front window! Thankfully, it was the middle of the night and no one was there. Somehow, they managed to get away, and I still wonder who that mystery driver was.
After that excitement, we all panicked, wondering what to do next. One of my clients connected me with a realtor to find a temporary space, and we ended up with the perfect spot in North Fargo—so close to home, yay! That “temporary” studio became my home base for five years, filled with countless sessions and memories. I felt like a real grown-up with my own studio, signage and everything.
Meanwhile, my old studio mate (and friend) from downtown built her own studio just two blocks south of me. Recently, she reached out with a great offer to join her, and I gladly accepted. She was scaling back and looking to share her space, which turned out to be exactly what I’d been needing. It’s similar in size to mine but with no walls—again, so much room for activities! Plus, all the natural light I could ask for.
Now that we’re up to speed, let’s get on with the tour!
The Bed Setup
This spot is easily one of my favorites in the studio. It’s super versatile—I use it for everything from family and sibling shots during newborn sessions to capturing a newly sitting six-month-old against the pillows. Styled with a touch of boho, it keeps the focus right where it belongs: on the subject. The big windows with sheer curtains flood the area with natural light, making every shot feel bright and fresh. And for those all-white looks, there’s even a roll-out white floor—perfect for cake smashes or clean, minimal portraits.
The Client Hangout Spot
This lounge area is designed for you to kick back while I work my magic with your little one. With comfy couches, coffee, a TV, and a stash of snacks and toys for any older children along for the ride, you’re all set. Whether you’re watching me, catching a nap, or sneaking in some phone time, this spot has you covered.
The Vintage Crib
This crib is a true studio staple—I’ve had her forever, and I just can’t seem to part with it. There’s something timeless about a little one-year-old standing at the rails with the biggest smile that never gets old. Babies and vintage cribs are a perfect match, and they make for a great shot every time.
Backdrops
What’s a photography studio without a collection of backdrops? I’ve got a few staples that I reach for time and again. There’s the natural barnwood backdrop, a classic that’s been with me since day one and adds the perfect touch of warmth. To complement that, I also have a white painted barnwood option. And for a fun pop of color, I’ve got seamless paper in a range of shades to match any style.
Newborn Heaven
This is one of my favorite spaces—so much fun to look at! Every newborn session starts right here, with all the essentials within reach. There’s a full wall of fabric backdrops, wraps, tiny outfits, and headbands, so you don’t have to bring a thing. I also have a sweet selection of outfits for "sitters" that perfectly match the studio’s vibe, making it easy to capture those adorable milestone moments.
So there you have it—the grand tour! I can’t wait to welcome you in, make some memories, and enjoy a little fun together in this new space. See you soon!
