When should I schedule my newborn session?

The best time to schedule your newborn session is actually before your little one arrives. Believe it or not, I’ve even been let in on the secret before some family members have! When booking, pick a date about a week after your due date—don’t worry, we’ll adjust as needed once baby makes their debut. This way, we keep things flexible but locked in.

When is the best time to photograph my newborn?

Newborn sessions work best when babies are 7-20 days old. This window is prime time—they’re less likely to startle, breastfeeding tends to be established, and they’re still flexible for those adorable, curly poses. If your baby arrives early and ends up with a NICU stay, we can still capture those precious moments long after their due date, so no worries!

How long does a newborn session last?

Newborn sessions tend to take around 2-3 hours. The full session runs about 3 hours, while a mini is about 2. This gives us time to feed, soothe, and switch up the setups without rushing. Some sleepyheads breeze right through, while those who need extra cuddles or milk might take a bit longer—either way, we’ll go at your baby’s pace to make the experience as smooth as possible.

What do I need to bring?

You don’t need to bring anything specific for your baby unless there’s something special you’d like to include. I have a variety of hats, headbands, and props available. Based on your questionnaire, I’ll have all my setups ready to go beforehand, and if you’ve requested specific colors, I’ll incorporate those—otherwise, I’ll let my creativity lead the way! Feel free to bring diaper bag essentials, but don’t worry if you forget something—I have plenty of extras in the studio.

When should I feed my baby?

Feedings are key! Ideally, feeding 2-3 hours before the session and again just before heading to the studio helps your baby stay relaxed and sleepy for those cozy poses. But don’t stress if the timing isn’t exact—this is just the ideal scenario. If baby needs to eat as soon as you arrive or at any point during the session, we’ll adjust without a problem. You’re absolutely welcome to breastfeed here, and if you prefer, feel free to bring a nursing cover. I’m completely comfortable with whatever you’re comfortable with—my priority is that you and baby feel at ease. Just bring an extra bottle or two if you’re using them, and we’ll go with the flow!

How can I help my baby be ready for the session?

Now these are just tips, so don't stress if it doesn't go according to plan! If possible, try keeping baby awake for an hour, maybe two before the session—a bath is a great way to help keep them alert. Then, as you head over, they’ll likely drift off to sleep in the car. When you arrive, just leave them snug in their car seat, and I’ll gently take them out to keep the transition smooth.

For clothing, an oversized sleeper without a onesie underneath is perfect. Skipping the onesie helps me avoid waking baby up when undressing, so we can start the session seamlessly. And if your baby uses a pacifier, having one on hand can provide some comfort between poses. If you prefer not to use pacifiers, just let me know—I’m happy to work with whatever makes you and baby feel most comfortable for a relaxed, enjoyable session!

Can family members, including siblings and parents, be involved in the session?

Absolutely! Family and sibling involvement adds so much to your newborn session and is available with the full session option. For family photos, light, neutral outfits work best on our white background or bed setup, keeping the focus on your baby. I usually keep baby swaddled, as it helps them stay calm and allows for more poses.

If siblings have shorter attention spans, I can photograph them with baby at the beginning, after a few swaddled shots, or at the end. If parents want to drive separately to take big brother or sister home after their photos, they certainly can. I also have toys, TV and snacks on hand to help keep them entertained if they stay.
